Recently, a new release by BTS is ranked at №1 in Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, and it once again heightened the stature of K-Pop in the world. Not only music, but also Korean cultural contents such as movies, broadcasts, games and more are continuously leading their ways in the world.
▶ Increase in Hanryu contents participation/experience through expansion of online platform : Major online and mobile platforms are YouTube, Netflix, Facebook in that order, and the most accessed contents are TV drama, music, variety show in that order.
▶ Increase in application by foreigners interested in Korean culture: Number of foreign students applying for Korean Language Proficiency Test is increasing, and foreign creators on YouTube who introduce Korean culture, such as ‘Korean Englishman’ are also increasing.
Consumption of Hanryu contents related to K-Pop and club participation are surveyed to be increased by 9~11% compared to the previous year. And, there is a growing trend of foreigners who want to experience K-Pop in person through visit and study in Korea. Such trend is indicated in various indices as below.
More than 1,600 foreign tourists from 70 countries participated in Seoul Hanryu Cultural Experience Tour Program last year. Recently, the program is producing real-time live contents of ‘Home Theater Front Row’ with Hanryu Star Seventeen. King Sejong Institute, which currently holds Korean language learning programs abroad, has opened programs in 34 new locations including Jordan this year on top of 200 locations around the world, and it shows their passion to learn Hanryu.
